Bringing the theme, "Rooted in Community: From Seed to Strength," into this year's logo design by youth at Movement City in Lawrence!

At a time when so many of us and our loved ones are feeling fear, uncertainty and danger, we wanted to emphasize the importance of community. We support one another, we keep each other grounded, we provide safety and solidarity with one another, especially in times of crisis.

Expanding the "root network" with Movement City

Movement City is program of Lawrence CommunityWorks that serves as a safe space for creative young people (ages 10-18) to explore and develop their talents and passions with a network of like-minded peers and supportive adult mentors. Students engage in digital, performance, and visual arts, as well as technology, academic support, civic engagement and leadership development activities.

Bread & Roses Heritage Festival reached out last year in an effort to engage more of the city's youth. As one component of the collaboration, Bread & Roses Heritage Committee Co-President, Steve Osemwenkhae, and former President, Glennys Sanchez, visited Movement City's Clubhouse workshop to talk to the students about the Festival and its history going back to the Strike of 1912.

Movement City's "Clubhouse workshop is home to all digital illustrators, animators, and graphic designers, so [working on this year's logo] was a great opportunity for our kids to learn how to create a logo for web, social media, and merchandise," said Clubhouse Coordinator, Stephanie Cabrera. "Plus as an instructor, I thought it was important for them to learn what it means to work with a 'client' and receive feedback."

LINDA CEDENO

Hello, my name is Linda Cedeno! I am 15 years old and I have been a part of Movement City for a year. I use drawing as a way to express my thoughts and emotion, and I often find inspiration through Pinterest. My style leans towards simplicity - I like to keep my art clean, minimalist, and focused.

I first started designing the new logo for Bread & Roses Heritage Festival to keep me busy, but as the day went on I found myself more and more invested. Through this process, along with my time in Movement City Clubhouse, I've grown to really enjoy and explore digital art in new ways.

THE PROCESS

With the 2024 and 2025 logos, the students began by reviewing the theme for that year's Festival. "All kids sit with either myself or another instructor and break down what does the theme mean to them and what can we visualize from the theme," explained Stephanie.

"What differed this year was that the kids were more eager to participate after they saw last year's winner, Kameel's, work on social media and on the t-shirts." Creativity continued to spark!
